Beyond The Castle: A Digital Nomad’s Guide to Edinburgh Living
As remote work continues to be prevalent, there is a trend toward individuals embracing digital nomad lifestyles. The allure of international travel paired with the freedom of working online has people packing their laptops and hopping on planes. With a surge in short-term relocations, charming European cities like Edinburgh find themselves welcoming a few temporary residents. Renowned for its enchanting atmosphere and friendly locals, Edinburgh stands out as an ideal destination for remote professionals. However, simply arriving in a foreign country is only the initial step toward embracing a culturally immersive experience.
L to R: Princes Street Gardens, Cockburn Street, Balmoral Hotel
You’ve toured Edinburgh Castle, walked through Princes Street Gardens, window shopped on the Royal Mile, seen the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Grassmarket, and watched a sunset from Calton Hill. So what’s next? Having conquered the touristy must-sees in Edinburgh, your challenge is to shift from vacation mode to living like a local. After three months of living in New Town as an American transplant, I’m sharing my insights and authentic finds that made it easy to embrace Edinburgh as my home away from home.
One of the quickest ways to immerse yourself in a city is to build a routine that involves regular interactions with locals. Consider signing up for a workout class to mingle with Scots who share your interests. Edinburgh has several fantastic options for exercise from high-intensity classes at CaveFit to zen yoga sessions at Tribe Yoga. If you’re eager for new experiences, look into enrolling in a 12-week dance course at Dance Base. Catering to a diverse range of styles and skill levels, this centrally located dance studio will surely have something that suits your preferences.
Another way to build a routine is to mark down the schedule for street markets near your neighborhood. On Sundays, the Stockbridge Farmers Market is a must. Enjoy the bustling crowds, shop for local produce, and try your first Scotch egg on a sunny afternoon. You may even get lucky and receive a spontaneous poem from students sitting out front with their typewriters.
Enhancing the sense of familiarity in a city involves practical steps, such as acquiring a library card and discovering convenient restaurants that offer takeaway food. Edinburgh’s Central Lending Library provides free library cards to any resident, short-term or permanent, granting access to their extensive collections. For those inspired to read literature set in Edinburgh, be sure to snag a copy of Anatomy: A Love Story and enjoy a fast-paced, exciting read about a female surgeon. This library location also has a great workspace with large desks and natural light on the top floor suitable for quiet, focused work. Following a productive work session, the neighboring Deli Global may tempt you with warm paninis as an easy takeaway option. Quick and hassle-free takeaway is invaluable during busy work days so building a repertoire in your area is important. While international chains like Wagamama and Nandos offer takeaways, as a visitor, I encourage you to direct your patronage toward local small businesses. Furthermore, Edinburgh-based restaurants and cafes will give you a more genuine sense of the flavors of the city.
L to R: Stockbridge Market, Rare Birds Books, Ghost Bus Tour
For female travelers seeking companions, signing up for a women-only event is a fun and safe way to build friendships. Rare Birds Books, a bookshop stocking only female authors, hosts regular community events for women. From author nights to holiday gatherings, these evenings provide a perfect atmosphere for socializing. Another option for connecting with fellow explorers is to register for a Main Character Club event hosted by Scotland Magic. This club has over 5,000 members and is always planning special events for the women of Edinburgh.
Finally, be sure to delve into the city’s unique history to fully appreciate the place you’ve chosen to call home. Edinburgh boasts an eerie past, complete with tales of the early days of surgery, body snatching, ghosts, and witchcraft. Only the brave of heart will walk around Greyfriars Kirkyard at night. The Edinburgh Ghost Bus Tour and The Real Mary King’s Close Tour are two mainstream attractions that are worthwhile and provide an entertaining look into Edinburgh’s story.
