How To Write an Impressive LinkedIn Bio
Why is a LinkedIn Bio Important
With job postings attracting easily 100 applicants in the first 24 hours, standing out is crucial. In such a competitive market, the little things matter more than ever. On a fairly rigid platform, LinkedIn allows for creativity in the bio section; giving you 2,600 characters to showcase who you are and why potential employers or clients should be interested in you. Most people waste this opportunity.
The Classic Bio Formula and Why It’s Failing You
There’s a common formula for LinkedIn bios that many follow. A quick Google search for “how to write a good LinkedIn bio” will suggest:
Discuss your background
Talk about your current role
Mention your accomplishments
Highlight relevant skills and talents
This means that a lot of bios end up looking like this:
Imagine being a recruiter tasked with reviewing candidates. After glancing at a dozen LinkedIn profiles, do you think this bio will be memorable?
What Makes a Good LinkedIn Bio
After reviewing countless LinkedIn bios over the years, my advice is simple: show people who you are, don’t just tell them. Instead of writing, “I’m creative”, make your bio stand out in a way that demonstrates your creativity. Embody the traits you want to highlight rather than stating them.
A LinkedIn bio should accomplish three things:
1. Catch the eye: Your first sentence needs to grab attention. Make it intriguing enough that readers want to click “see more” and continue reading. Be bold and push the boundaries. Remember most profiles only get a few seconds to make an impression. Your opener needs to jump out at people.
Tip: “Hi there, I’m [name] and I’m a [job title]” is not going to cut it.
Instead, try:
A brief anecdote from a defining moment in your career
A quote from a highly-satisfied client
A playful joke (if it fits your brand and industry)
2. Communicate your unique value: Now that you’ve captured their attention, tell a story. Make it engaging and easy to digest. What’s the single most important thing you want someone to know about you?
3. Leave a lasting impression: At the end of the day, you want people to remember your bio. It should entice people to learn more.
Eye-Catching LinkedIn Bio Example
Here’s an example of a memorable bio for someone who is analytical, results-driven, and prides themselves on delivering high-quality work. Instead of stating these traits outright, they could use this template to capture attention:
See the difference? This bio is unique and stands out from the typical ones you’ve seen. A well-crafted LinkedIn bio showcases your personality and what sets you apart from the competition. By showing who you are instead of telling, you create a memorable impression that resonates with recruiters and potential clients.
