After reviewing countless LinkedIn bios over the years, my advice is simple: show people who you are, don’t just tell them. Instead of writing, “I’m creative”, make your bio stand out in a way that demonstrates your creativity. Embody the traits you want to highlight rather than stating them. 

A LinkedIn bio should accomplish three things:

1. Catch the eye: Your first sentence needs to grab attention. Make it intriguing enough that readers want to click “see more” and continue reading. Be bold and push the boundaries. Remember most profiles only get a few seconds to make an impression. Your opener needs to jump out at people.

Tip: “Hi there, I’m [name] and I’m a [job title]” is not going to cut it. 

Instead, try:

  • A brief anecdote from a defining moment in your career

  • A quote from a highly-satisfied client

  • A playful joke (if it fits your brand and industry)

2. Communicate your unique value: Now that you’ve captured their attention, tell a story. Make it engaging and easy to digest. What’s the single most important thing you want someone to know about you?

3. Leave a lasting impression: At the end of the day, you want people to remember your bio. It should entice people to learn more.
